Movie Soundtrack

Project

For your final project this nineweeks you will be creating your own soundtrack music to accompany a film clip of your choice (no more than 1 minute in length). To do this, we will be utilizing an online mixing program called Soundation. Please follow the steps below to begin your project.

Step 1: Plan Your Film and Create

1.) Use the link to access your storyboard planning sheet (you will probably need to print this out or see Miss Strock for a hard copy in class).

2.) You will plan out your film. In the lined areas write out the scene, and in the picture boxes set up the camera angle (where is the camera looking and how the scene is laid out). Be Specific! Every detail should be planned, and you, as the film director will need to be able to run the filming of your clip.

3.) We will not be using audio speech, so make sure your film clip is something that does not have spoken audio. Your film clip should be no less than 30 seconds and no more than about 1 minute to 2 minutes (2 is the absolute max!)

4.) After you have planned out your movie, make a props list on a post it note (provided in class) and be ready to record as per instructions in class soon!

Step 2:

Access Your Google Drive Account and the Step Google Form for this Project

The very first thing you will need to do today is to log into your school district Google Drive Account. Many of you already have access to this account and will merely need to log in and follow the form link here or in your Gmail (I have shared the form with you) with your instructions for this project. Those of you have never used your school district Google account will recieve help in setting up your account correctly today.

After you have logged in, please access your daily checklist submission form either in your Gmail or by clicking the link below. You need to update and submit this every day at the end of class as your exit ticket, so please be sure to send yourself a copy of your form at the end of class every day.

Step 3:

Creating a Soundation Account

  • Begin by following the button link below to Soundation's website. (I recommend splitting your browser window into two and using the two pages side by side while following these instructions to set up your account.)

  • You may wish to use and follow along with the tutorial video below to set up your account. In the event that streaming the video is not available, please follow along with the written instructions below.

  • After you have opened up the Soundation page, select the link button "Sign Up" to begin the process of creating your own account.

  • We ARE NOT using a subscribed account (as these cost money), but you will need to select "Get Free Account" to set up one you can use for free.

  • After selecting "Get Free Account" the site will take you to a page that looks like this. As you already have a Google account, you are going to use this to create your Soundation account. Select Sign In with Google AFTER making sure you have followed earlier steps in class today to log into your school account.

DO NOT type anything in the form or create an account using other Google Accounts or Emails you may have!

  • Select your .g.lickingvalley.k12.oh.us account on the page.

  • You will then be directed to a profile page. There is very little to fill out here, despite how big it looks.

  • In the 1 box type your First and MIDDLE name. Please do NOT use your last name.

  • In the 2 box just click once. It will update and copy your first and middle name into the box.

  • Select SAVE and it should redirect you to the website's homepage. Now you can select "Launch the Studio" to begin working in the program.

Step 4:

Tutorials on How to Use Soundation

  • I recommend splitting your browser screens so you may experiment in your own Soudation screen while watching the tutorial video.

  • You may wish to use and follow along with the tutorial video below to learn how to use Soundation. (If you already are familiar with the studio from a different class feel free to skip this step and move on to Step 4 to begin your project.) In the event that streaming the video is not available, please use the picture key below and experiment with the open broswer to familiarize yourself with the program below.

  1.  These are Audio Channels. They will only accept music files from the Electronica File Folders in your library. Use only 1 audio file per channel! This way if you decide later on that you don't like a sound file, you can just delete the entire channel, rather than have to search your entire project.

  2. The blue channels are MIDI channels. These channels will accept longer and more complex files from the MIDI folders in your library only. Use only one MIDI file per channel! Also, when using MIDI files, be sure that the key signature name (the letter after the file name) matches if you layer on more than one at a time.

  3. At the top of your screen you will find your work space. Here, your screen is divided into measures of music with four beats per measure (1, 2, 3, etc. represent measure numbers, the  hash marks represent beats in each measure). You can move blocks of sound from your library into measures simply by dragging and dropping.

  4.  Here you will find your sound library. The Electronica drop down folder contains sounds that will only play in the Grey Audio Channels. The labels 125 and 130 simply refer to metrenome (speed) markings (125 is slightly slower than 130). The MIDI folder contains sounds that will only play in the Blue MIDI Channels. Drag and drop sounds from these various folders to create your own composition.

  5. Here is where you can add additional Audio and MIDI channels. Please remember to only use one sound per audio channel!!! The "+" will add another Grey Audio channel for electronica files, the "+" with the notes after it will add another Blue MIDI channel. You can move audio channels into different orders by grabbing the channel and placing it where you would like it to go.

  6. Here you can find your play test bar. Selecting the play button will allow you to hear what you are composing. Listen often! When you are done, make sure to hit the rewind, arrow back button to bring your cursor back to the beginning of your composition!

  • Saving is very simple. Make sure you are logged in with your Google Account and then work on your file.

  • When you are ready to save, select File, Save from the drop down menu in the upper left hand corner of the screen.

  • I recommend renaming the file with your first and last name and 8B. (Example: JohnDoe8B)

  • Please Save Often!!! Unlike the Google Drive Applications, this program DOES NOT automatically save. I recommend saving about every five minutes. Your work WILL NOT recover if your browser or computer crashes, so it is important to save often.

  • When finished working in class for the day, make sure you save and then Log Out of your Soundation account.

Step 5:

Creating Your Soundtrack

  • Use Soundation to create a soundtrack to accompany and fit your movie clip that you either created or selected.

  • Your music should make sense and match your video clip!! Make sure that it utilizes cueing and some of the other musical techniques that we've discussed with films during class. (Think about recurring character themes or mood music, for example).

  • Reference your film clip on my computer often to review your music with the movie. Make sure it is the right length, and that the music fits up with key moments in the film.

  • When you are ready, you will check your completed project against the project rubric link below and then follow the steps to turn it in.

Final Step:

Submit Your Completed Project

1.) Save your project. Make sure the file name is: FirstName8B (Example: John 8B)

2.) Under the File Menu Select "Publish Track"

3.) Double check that the File name is correct! And then Select "OK".

4.) Select "Edit Track Info" when the Next Screen Appears.

5.) In the Description Box please type in the name of your film clip or if you used a created film clip. Also, change it so that viewers CANNOT COMMENT and so that they CAN download the published track. This is important, because if I am unable to download it I won't be able to access it to pair it with your film in iMovie.

6.) Then select "Save".

7.) The program will then take you back to your home screen where your file is displayed. Please select from the choices to view your file.

8.) Now you should be on a page with your published file. Please select and copy the link at the top of the page.

9.) Return to your Google Drive Account and open your G-Mail Account from the App Menu.

10.) Create a new email message. Copy and paste your link in the email body of text. Then send the email to lvmsipadmusic@g.lickingvalley.k12.oh.us

  • After you have finished your project, please use the following link below to aide you in reviewing for your QA. It will allow you to review the music listening terms from this nineweeks.

  • You may also choose to work on your written Music Theory section QA review packet.

To access QA review questions follow the following steps (quiz will be made available by teacher near end of the unit):
